Quick Guide to Flat Rates

What would doubling your income mean?

  • "Life-changing"
  • "It would mean I can eat!"
  • "A pathway to free myself from my current job as staff editor"
  • "Being able to save for potential kids colleges"

These are just a few of the answers I've received from editors.

Most editors struggle from job to job, hoping they can get the hours they need to pay the bills. Saving for retirement or financial security? Forget about it.

That doesn't have to be you.

I started editing for $14/hr

Most editors start by charging hourly. That's the way a regular job works, so it's a natural fit.

Over the course of years we incrementally raise our hourly rate. Usually it's only a $5/hr bump.

The problem is, our experience is increasing at the same time. A job that used to take us 20 hours now takes us 10.

But does our hourly rate double to match our efficiency? Nope.

Then I switched the flat rates

A rush job came in. I decided to try a flat rate of $3,000. They said yes and I finished the edit in under 30 hours.

I changed one thing and made $100/hr. I've been using flat rates ever since.

Here's a look at a few recent jobs:
